Post-Adoption Services

Searches for a birth parent or birth sibling at the request of an adult adoptee can be undertaken. The Post Adoptions Search Service recognizes that the adult adoptee has a right to search, but requires that the permission of birth relatives be obtained before any identifying information can be released. To obtain permission, a search is conducted. If the birth relative agrees to contact, reunions may be undertaken.
Non-identifying information will be shared in writing with the person requesting it. It is not a requirement to advise or consult with birth relatives or adoptive parents when only non-identifying information is sought.

A search may be conducted when the health of an adoptee or his/her children is such that a physician requires the adoptee's medical history in order to diagnose or treat an illness. Also, a search may be conducted if the birth parents make known medical conditions of an hereditary nature which was not known to the adoptee or the adoptive parents at the time of the adoption.

A qualifying adult adoptee is an individual 19 years and over whose adoption was finalized in this province or a former foster child who entered the care of the Director of Child Welfare for the purpose of adoption but was not adopted.

All requests for identifying and non-identifying information must be submitted in writing to Post Adoption Services.
